What Is Ekadashi Vrat?

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the eleventh day of the lunar month fortnight is called Ekadashi day. Ekadashi is a full moon or new moon day as per the lunar calendar cycles.

It has a special significance for the day, which represents the 11 senses of our body, including the mind, five action organs, and five senses.

Ekadashi vrat day is considered the most auspicious day for pleasing Lord Vishnu. Fasting on this day gives a healthy mind and body.

Lord Vishnu is the guardian of the universe and is associated with the vrat. Chanting the mantra of Lord Vishnu brings you close to the way of moksha.

There may be another specific or scientific reason integrated with the Ekadashi vrat. Across 48 days, our body transforms each mandala that stretches.

Earlier, the sages and seers observed fasting for three days, and between each fasting, there was a regular interval to stay healthy.

Ekadashi specifically catered to this regulation. There are three Ekadashis in a mandala.

How Many Types of Ekadashi are Performed?

During the entire year, according to the lunar month, 24 Ekadashi comes. And for each Ekadashi, the rules for fasting are different and unique. Some of the Ekadashi vrat is mentioned below:

  • Putrada Ekadashi marks the start of the year with its occurrence in January. For those who seek to have a child, this is the most auspicious day to observe fasting to appease Lord Vishnu and receive blessings for a progeny.
  • In the rituals of Ekadashi, donating or fasting is important. Donating and receiving food items are considered auspicious for sesame seeds. This is known as Satilla Ekadashi. Therefore, on this Ekadashi, giving guava, pumpkin, and coconut to the Lord is an important part of this day.

  • Varuthini Ekadashi: Fasting on this day is comparable to doing penance for ten thousand years. Offering Anna daana to Brahmins is lucky.
  • Nirjala Ekadashi is the hardest of all Ekadashis, allowing followers to consume only one drop of water throughout the entire period of fasting. People who cannot adhere to this rule may eat only one meal per day.
