The origin of the Pitru Paksha is found in ancient Hindu scriptures like the great epic Mahabharata. The story of Pirtu Paksha revolves around the great warrior of Mahabharata, Karana who got to heaven after his glorious death in the Mahabharat war.<\/p>\n

When his soul reached heaven, he was offered jewels and gold to eat which he wished to have during his life. Surprised at this, Karana approached the king of heaven, Indra to solve the mystery.<\/p>\n

Lord Indra revealed the mystery and told him the truth that during his whole lifetime, Karana has shown his great generosity toward donation to others and become the greatest donor of all time, but he never offered anything to his ancestors throughout his life as he was unaware of his lineage as he was an adopted child.<\/p>\n
